LLNL XDIR offers the ability to view directoryinformation in four different formats, ranging from longlists to tree structures. LLNL XDIR is based on UNIX,the C programming language, OSF/Motif and FTP; hence,LLNL XDIR is highly portable. With LLNL XDIR, the user can manage all of his/her filesin a network. Specifically, LLNL XDIR can be used tobrowse directory structures, transfer files anddirectories, view local and remote files, delete filesand directories, rename files and directories, and searchdirectories on one or more hosts for entries matching aspecified pattern. LLNL XDIR uses the familiar folder-icon metaphor tosimultaneously display any number of directories of anynumber of (local or remote) hosts, with each directorybeing displayed in its own window. Several existingproducts are able to manage files on a single system, butLLNL XDIR extends this capability to manage files on anentire network. LLNL XDIR does not have a "main" window, as such, butinstead consists of a number of windows, each of whichdisplays the contents of a local or remote host'sdirectory. Each of these "directory windows" has acomplete set of controls for setting modes and invokingoperations. Several other windows are provided forsetting general preferences and displaying diagnosticinformation. LLNL XDIR offers elaborate directory-browsingfunctionality. Each directory can be viewed in severaldifferent formats, ranging from long lists to treestructures. A number of mechanisms are provided totraverse directory structures, including: (1)double-clicking a directory name/icon to enter thatdirectory, (2) a "go to parent directory" button, (3) a"go to home directory" button, and (4) a sophisticatedhistory mechanism for easily reentering previouslyvisited directories. LLNL XDIR provides powerful file transfer capabilityusing drag-and-drop. For the user, it is just as easy tocopy a file between two remote systems as it is to copy afile from the local host to itself. Files anddirectories may be transferred either singly or in groupswith just a few movements of the mouse. One of LLNL XDIR's most powerful features is its abilityto search directory structures for entry names matching aspecified pattern. The user is able to specify the rangeand depth of such searches. The search can be restrictedto a single subdirectory or can extend across machineboundaries. With LLNL XDIR, the user is able to view local or remotefiles, using either the built-in viewer or anycombination of external viewers of the user's choice(e.g., "emacs" or "xv"). LLNL XDIR's history mechanism make it simple to establisha connection with a remote host. This and other featuresmake it especially painless to connect to an anonymousFTP site. A number of directory-manipulation features are providedfor operating on selected entries. There are severalways to select a group of directory entries to operateupon, including direct toggling of entries, sweeping outa rectangular area, and wildcard selection. Once entriesare selected, the user is able to rename entries, deleteentries (including entire subdirectories), or moveentries between directories within the same host. Theuser is also able to create directories, both on localand remote hosts. LLNL XDIR utilizes a history mechanism for automaticallysaving (1) wildcard expressions used in selectingdirectory entries, (2) previously visited directories,(3) host/user name pairs used in connecting to remotehosts, and (4) low-level "quoted" commands sent to thehost's FTP server. The purpose of this mechanismis to reduce the amountof typing and mouse movement required. For example, whenthe user wishes to apply a wildcard expression to selectdirectory entries to operate on, a list of recentlyreferenced wildcard expressions for that host will bepresented to the user; the user can then double-click onan existing wildcard expression to apply it. The historiesare automatically preserved across LLNL XDIR sessions. LLNL XDIR presents the user with a graphical userinterface for easily tailoring the program's behavior. The user is able to specify such things as whether he/shewould like the delete operation to first pop up averification dialog listing the entries to be deleted. Finally, an extensive on-line help facility, much ofwhich is contextual, is provided. However, experiencehas shown that the user interface is so intuitive thatthe user rarely needs to access the help package. Source code for LLNL XDIR is tarred and compressed, and isavailable as follows: ftp://ftp-lc.llnl.gov/pub/ia/llnlxdir/latest_xdir.tar.Z http://www.llnl.gov/ia/xdir.html Here we list some features and ways to perform operations that might not be immediately obvious. SELECTING ENTRIES Many operations require that entries in a directory window first be selected. Besides using any of the items in a directory window's SELECT menu, you can select/deselect entries by (1) single-clicking on an entry (which toggles its selection state), (2) holding the left mouse button down and dragging to sweep out a selection rectangle (which individually toggles each entry's selection state), or (3) typing a sequence of characters into the display area to select the first entry that most closely matches the characters. COPYING FILES AND DIRECTORIES Copy (i.e., transfer) selected entries by using the left mouse button to drag the entries. The drop site of the drag can be (1) the background of another directory window, or (2) a directory entry in any directory window (including the source directory window). Directories, as well as files, can be copied. LLNL XDIR does not permit transfers from a remote host to itself. The desired file transfer mode ("ASCII" or "Binary") can be specified by using the option menu in the toolbar of any directory window. MOVING FILES AND DIRECTORIES Move selected entries by using the left mouse button to drag the entries, and holding down the control key when the mouse button is released over the drop site. (A move differs from a copy operation in that (1) the source entries are destroyed, and (2) a move is usually implemented by manipulating file system pointers rather than by actually copying bits.) The drop site of the drag may be (1) the background of another directory window, or (2) a directory entry in any directory window (including the source directory window). LLNL XDIR allows moves only from a host to itself. VIEWING A FILE Besides viewing files by selecting the VIEW SELECTED ENTRIES item in a directory window's OPS menu, you can view a single file by double-clicking on an entry that LLNL XDIR knows not to represent a directory. DISPLAYING A DIRECTORY One of the many ways to display a directory is to double-clickon an entry that represents a directory. POP UP LAUNCH MENU Another way to pop up a launch menu (besides using the LAUNCH submenu of the OPS menu) is to hold down the right mouse button while the cursor is in the display area. POP UP "GO TO ANCESTORS" MENU Another way to pop up a "go to ancestors" menu (besides using the ANCESTOR submenu of the GOTO menu) is to hold down the right mouse button while the cursor is over the "Up Arrow" button in the toolbar. Select LLNL XDIR OVERVIEW in the HELP menu for a descriptionof LLNL XDIR. Select GETTING STARTED in the HELP menu for a briefdiscussion on how to use LLNL XDIR. Select CONTEXTUAL HELP in the HELP menu to change the cursorto a pointing hand. Move the hand and click on any graphicalelement in the directory window you wish to know more about. Many popup dialogs have help packages that can be accessedby clicking on their HELP buttons. Select ABOUT LLNL XDIR in the FILE menu for version and authorinformation. When LLNL XDIR is started, a window appears that displays thecontents of a directory on the local host. This windowis called a "directory window." You can have any numberof directory windows for any number of hosts. Use the CONNECT menu to connect to a remote host. SelectCONNECT TO ANONYMOUS to connect to an anonymous FTP site. Choose CONNECT TO REMOTE to connect to other remotehosts. A directory window will be created for thespecified host. You can use a host's directory window to create anotherdirectory window for that host. First make sure thattunneling mode is off for that directory window (usingthe tunnel icon in the toolbar). Then, simply change toanother undisplayed directory by using any of thefollowing techniques: (1) double-click an entry name oricon that represents a directory, (2) press the "go toparent directory" button (the up-arrow button in thetoolbar), (3) press the "go to home directory" button(the house button in the toolbar), or (4) select an itemin the GOTO menu. If tunneling mode happens to be on,the current directory window is used to display thespecified directory. LLNL XDIR has several mechanisms to aid the user in managing aproliferation of directory windows: (1) directory windowsmay be individually iconified (using the window manager),(2) all iconified LLNL XDIR windows can be redisplayed byselecting DEICONIFY ALL in the FILE menu, (3) any requestto display a directory that is iconified or buried underother windows causes it to be brought to thetop, and (4) the WINS menu can be used to identifyexisting directory windows and display them on top. Change between different formats for displayinginformation within a directory window by toggling thelayout buttons in the directory window's toolbar. Many operations require that entries in a directory windowfirst be selected. Select/deselect entries by (1)single-clicking on an entry (toggles selection state),(2) holding the left mouse button down and dragging tosweep out a selection rectangle (toggles selectionstates), (3) selecting any of the items in the directorywindow's SELECT menu, or (4) typing a sequence ofcharacters into a directory window to select the firstentry that most closely matches the characters. Copy (i.e., transfer) selected entries by using the leftmouse button to drag the entries. The drop site of thedrag can be (1) the background of another directorywindow, or (2) a directory entry in any directory window(including the source directory window). Directories, aswell as files, can be transferred. LLNL XDIR does not permittransfers from a remote host to itself. The desired filetransfer mode can be specified by using the option menuin the toolbar of any directory window. Move selected entries by using the left mouse button todrag the entries, and holding down the control key whenthe mouse button is released over the drop site. (A movediffers from a copy in that (1) the source entriesare destroyed, and (2) a move is usually implemented bymanipulating file system pointers rather than by actuallycopying bits.) The drop site of the drag can be (1) thebackground of another directory window, or (2) a directoryentry in any directory window (including the sourcedirectory window). LLNL XDIR only allows moves from a host toitself. View selected files by selecting VIEW SELECTED ENTRIES ina directory window's OPS menu. Also, you maydouble-click on an entry that LLNL XDIR knows not to be adirectory. Configure the viewer by selecting item VIEWERPREFERENCES in the PREFS menu. Be sure to first set thefile transfer mode by using the option menu in thetoolbar of any directory window. Delete selected entries by pressing the trash can buttonin the toolbar. Directories, as well as files, may bedeleted. Search for an entry that matches a specified wildcardexpression by selecting SEARCH in the OPS menu. You areable to specify the range and depth of the search. Aftera match has been found, you can continue the search byselecting SEARCH AGAIN in the OPS menu. Other operations on selected entries may be invokedby selecting appropriate items in the directory window'sOPS menu. Abort in-progress operations by pressing the animatedstop button in the upper-right corner of the affecteddirectory window (this button is normally labeled "LLNLXDIR"). LLNL XDIR will attempt to return control to youat the earliest possible moment. Use the cache mode button (the one labeled "C" in the toolbar)to control whether directory lists from remote hosts willbe saved and reused to quickly display revisited directories. Configure LLNL XDIR by selecting the GENERAL PREFERENCESitem in the PREFS menu. The FILE menu contains the following commands: ABOUT LLNL XDIR Displays information about this version of LLNL XDIR. ICONIFY ALL Changes all the top-level windows in the application into icons. DEICONIFY ALL Changes all the application's icons back into top-level windows. CLOSE Destroys this directory window. If this directory window isthe last for its host, the host is disconnected. This isnot an iconify operation. EDIT HISTORY Displays the Edit History dialog. QUIT Terminates LLNL XDIR.The CONNECT menu contains the following commands forconnecting/disconnecting local and remote hosts: CONNECT TO LOCAL Connects to the local host (i.e., the host upon which LLNLXDIR is executing). If already connected, an existing directorywindow for that host is brought to the front. CONNECT TO REMOTE Displays a dialog that allows the user to connect to aremote host. If you wish to connect to an anonymous FTP site,it is better to select CONNECT TO ANONYMOUS, instead. CONNECT TO ANONYMOUS Displays a dialog that enables the user to easily connect to aremote FTP site. DISCONNECT Terminates the connection to the host associated with thisdirectory window. All directory windows associated with thishost are closed. The SELECT menu contains the following commands forselecting/deselecting entries in this directory window: SELECT ALL ENTRIES Selects all entries in this directory window. DESELECT ALL ENTRIES Deselects all entries in this directory window. USE WILDCARD Pops up a dialog that prompts for a wildcard expression to usein selecting entries in this directory window. The OPS menu contains the following commands: SEARCH Pops up a dialog to initiate a search of directory windowsfor entry names that match a specified pattern. SEARCH AGAIN Searches for the next entry that satifies the search criteriaspecified by the last search command. DELETE SELECTED ENTRIES Deletes the selected entries. Set general preferenceDELETE MODE to RECURSIVE to allow deletion of nonemptydirectories. A dialog pops up to enable you to monitorthe progress of the deletions. This dialog contains a buttonfor aborting the delete operation. WARNING: Exercise extreme caution when using this commandbecause, if recursion is enabled, you can delete entire directorysubtrees. RENAME SELECTED ENTRIES Pops up a dialog to individually rename selected entries. This issimilar to the UNIX "mv" command (except that the renamed entriescannot be moved to another directory). VIEW SELECTED ENTRIES Displays the selected files. The "Viewer Preferences"dialog (accessible via the PREFS menu) can be used tocontrol whether a particular file will be displayed usingthe built-in viewer or using an external viewer of yourchoice (e.g., "emacs" or "xv"). The selection of the vieweris configurable, based on the file extension (e.g.,".gif" or ".jpg"). This is no limit on the number ortypes of viewers that can be simultaneously displayed. The file is transferred according to the mode (ASCII orBinary) specified in the directory window's toolbar. Adialog pops up to enable you to monitor the progress ofthe transfers. The dialog contains a button for abortingthe transfers. The destination of the transfers is a temporary directorycreated in the directory defined as "P_tmpdir" in theinclude file "/usr/include/stdio.h". If the environmentvariable TMPDIR is defined, it is used to determine thedirectory. The temporary directory, and the files itcontains, are automatically deleted when you dismiss theviewer or terminate LLNL XDIR. If a file to be viewed is recognized as being compressed,it is expanded before viewing. LLNL XDIR executed thefollowing decompressors based on the file extension:"gunzip" for ".z" and ".gz"; "uncompress"for ".Z"; "atob" for".atob"; and "uudecode" for ".uu". LLNL XDIR searches forthe decompressor application in the standard way usingthe PATH environment variable. SEND QUOTED COMMAND Pops up a dialog to prompt for a "raw" command to send to theFTP server of the remote host. REFRESH DIRECTORY Redisplay this window's directory. MAKE DIRECTORY Props up a dialog that prompts for the name of a directory tocreate in the currently displayed directory. LAUNCH Launch application as a child process. If tunneling is off and you invoke a command from thiswindow to view a directory that is not already displayed, thena new window will be created to display that directory. Iftunneling is on and you invoke a command from this window toview a directory that is not already displayed, then thedirectory will be displayed in this window.Press this button to toggle this directory window's "cache"mode. If cache mode is on, then directory lists from remotehosts will be saved and reused to quickly display revisiteddirectories. The cache mode has no effect on the action of the refreshbutton, so clicking on the refresh button is a convenient wayof temporarily bypassing the cache without leaving cache mode. The cache will be bypassed when LLNL XDIR automatically updatesaffected directory windows after certain operations thatchange their contents (e.g., copies, renames, deletes, etc.). See General Preferences INITIAL CACHE MODE and MAX DIR CACHE LEN(KB) to configure the directory cache. DISCLAIMER: Although the cache mechanism is fairly reliable,it is possible to contrive cases involving the move or recursivecopy operations in which the cache can get out of sync with theactual directory structure. Use at own risk.Press this button to place this directory window into"Full Info Layout" mode, in which as much information aspossible is displayed (the amount of information availableis controlled by the host's FTP server)."Tree Layout" mode, which is similar to Iconic Layout modeexcept that each entry that is a directory also has a smalltriangle-shaped button that can be used to expand andcollapse the subdirectory. An icon and name are displayedfor each entry.
