Topic: Passwords

A password is an optional means of controlling access to a list. Its
usefulness becomes clear when you consider that it's easy to forge a
mail message in anyone's name, including the name of a list owner.

Once a password is set on a list, it imposes two restrictions: (1) you must
issue the password in a special way at the top of any submission to the list,
or the submission will be treated as if it were sent to a moderated list; and
(2) you must issue the password when interacting with listmanager to perform
list management functions.

When sending a submission to a list with a password on it, you must indicate
to listmanager that you are authorized to do so, or you will be treated as
a non-owner even if you are an owner. You do this by including this as the
first line of the text of your posting:

	authorization <password>

This line will be stripped from the actual posting before it is distributed.
If the password is correct, owner-level access is given and the item is
distributed. It is otherwise treated as though a non-owner sent the posting.
When sending mail to listmanager@hookup.net to do owner things to your list,
you must first authenticate yourself by sending the following command *after*
selecting your list with the "select" command:

	password <password>

Even if your mail address is marked as having owner access, you must do this
to get that access due to the fact that your e-mail address can be easily
forged. To remove the password feature, authenticate yourself using
"select" and "password", and then send the command:

	nopassword
